I JUST NEED SOMEONE TO TELL ME HOW TALL I AM

Review: Alibi

By Michael Henningsen

Obvious similarities with Wilco and the Wallflowers notwithstanding, British-born/Los Angeles-based rock quartet Minibar have perfected the art of making delicious, slightly forlorn power pop with hints of Midwestern twang and British introspection. Fly Below ... is the band's second full length and, in avoiding the fabled sophomore slump, they've managed to maintain focus--wondrous three-part harmonies juxtaposed against tender folds of guitar and airy melodies--while increasing their already formidable mystique in the context of what does and what does not pass for alt.country these days. Minibar wear their influences on their collective sleeve here, but that's a good thing.

From Alibi Vol. 12, No. 26, "Sonic Reducer"
